Date: April 29, 2017

Event: Junior LO206 (Race 2 of 5)

Series: F-100/F-206 SoCal Championship

Location: Adams Motorsports Park, Riverside, CA

Layout: Optional Layout (0.750-mile 14-turn sprint course)

Format: Four Stages; 5 min prac/5 min qual/8 lap heat/16 lap main

Finishes: 1st / 1st / 1st / 1st

Winner: Justin Blumenfeld of JBR (CRG KT1 #18)

Justin Blumenfeld and the No. 18 JBR Racing team drove like the wind and put down the fastest time of the event in LO206 out of both the junior and senior group, with a 52.256 second lap time and a top speed of 51.669 mph. The CRG machine ran strong all evening, leading up to the nighttime main event, where Justin was able to win from the pole and claim his first victory in F-100/F-206, with a gap of over 30 seconds back to second place.

Practice Recap:

Justin's afternoon began with a five minute practice session on track. Having researched the layout with onboard footage from prior events, he was able to quickly identify the racing line and come up to speed on the layout very rapidly, helping him to find the best grip through both banked turns and the fastest way around the track.

Qualifying Recap:

Feeling good about the layout, Justin was able to put down his fastest lap of the night in qualifying and easily take the pole.

Heat Recap:

Due to the time of the event, the second heat was removed from the schedule for the evening's racing program. Justin lucked out that the sun dipped behind a mountaintop just minutes before his run, so he didn't have to worry about taking the long straightaway with impaired vision. The team opted to leave the clear visor on in preparation for the night race. Even with the temperature starting to cool down, the grip level on the track remained high during this portion. Justin was able to finish this section in P1 as well.

Main Recap:

The team changed the digital dash MyChron display to red for the dark, and Justin took to the track with only one pace lap. The driver in P2 got an early jump before the drop of the green flag, but with no violation called, Justin drove hard, setting up an inside pass at turn six and driving clear before the end of the first lap. Overall track grip was reduced at this point due to the cooling temperatures, and on the sixth lap, Justin got a bit free and spun coming out of the first banked turn. Saving the kart from going off track, his fast reflexes and quick thinking allowed him to slide the #18 CRG machine back around and continue, still well ahead of the competitor in P2. From there on out, Justin drove a bit more cautiously, ensuring he would cruise smoothly to victory at the end of 16 laps. This is Justin's first win in the F-100/F-206 series and at this track, and is his first time racing at night under the lights. This track suits his driving style to a tee, and he's hopeful to be able to return here again for more racing in the near future.

F-100/F-206 SoCal Championship 2017 Season Standings:

At this time, the LO206 Junior class is not competing for championship points due to low entrant registration count. In fact, Justin was unable to compete in round one for this very reason, and the future rounds are questionable, pending enough entries. The team is hopeful that this will be met so they can compete with this club in the remaining races of the season, including those at Grange, Apex, Willow Springs, and Bakersfield.

Next Race:

Blumenfeld will return to CalSpeed at the Auto Club Speedway on May 13th for round four of Tri-C Karters, where he will be running the 0.720-mile Grande layout in the clockwise direction, and fighting hard to take the top spot in season points away from competitor Sophia Storey. Having made a few adjustments on his carburator for this race, the team feels they have picked up a bit of power they were missing, and are hopeful for a strong showing in two weeks with their current setup.
