On Saturday's Tri-C Karters round one race of the 2017 season at CalSpeed in Fontana, CA, Justin drove his #18 CRG machine to a third place podium finish, landing him third place in the points, but only eight points shy of closing in on second. The day started out a bit slow due to the green track from the rain the day before, but Justin quickly got his kart up to speed and put down some decent lap times. He was able to run the fastest times of the LO206 Jr. class in both heats one and two, and during the second one, he juked to the outside entering Long Beach and then broke away with a crossover move to the inside to try and gain the lead. Unfortunately, the move didn't pay off as some heavy braking during corner entry into the hairpin caused him to spin, and by the time he recovered, he ended in P3, where he started for the main.
During the main race, they were instructed to grid directly behind World Formula instead of half a field offset, and heavy traffic going into the chicane at turn one shuffled him to the rear, where he spent half the race trying to get around a slower driver. By the time he found a hole and pulled away, it was too late to make up the difference. He still ran very well, and took away some good info and a few strategy ideas for the next round. Hopefully he can start strong again and challenge for a victory for round two on March 4th.
